Governance
PIDE was established in Karachi in 1957 and was accorded the status of an autonomous research organization by the Government of Pakistan in 1964. It is devoted to theoretical and empirical research in Development Economics in general, and Pakistan-related economic issues in particular. In addition to providing a strong academic foundation for economic policymaking, PIDE’s research offers a window through which the global community can view the nature and direction of economic research in Pakistan.
The Institute’s scope of research has expanded over time to include other social sciences such as demography, anthropology, and interdisciplinary studies, recognizing their importance in developing sound economic policies and sustainable development frameworks. Over the past 67 years, PIDE has earned international recognition for the quality and impact of its research. Its faculty is highly accomplished, and its advisory committee includes world-renowned economists, including Nobel Laureate Professor Robert A. Mundell.
